This will be a long post, but I'll appreciate if anyone can help me.

I recently re-installed AOM gold on a pc with windows 7, the game used to run fine but as of now it shows a message saying I need Admin permission to run the game, even though there's only one account on the computer.

In search of how to fix this problem I came across some news about how an update 'KB3086255' broke many games, including AOM. That's all fine, but one of the proposed solutions to this problem was to disable the secdrv.sys by editing the Registry. Here I wanna quote directly from the article I found:

'Or, you can edit the registry directly. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicessecdrv
Right-click Start, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, do one of the following:
Type 4 to disable the driver’s service, and then click OK.
Type 3 to set the driver’s service to manual, and then click OK.
Type 2 to set the driver’s service to automatic, and then click OK.
Exit Registry Editor.
I honestly cannot see anyone constantly enabling and then disabling the already hated and buggy secdrv.sys driver service on a daily basis. It will get left enabled and then a user will be vulnerable to the attacks currently using it.'

As said in the article, leaving the driver service disabled would be leaving the computer vulnerable, so I went on to edit the registry because I wanted to know if that was the source of the problem, I was just gonna run it once to see if it would work and then get the service back on. However, to my surprise, the service was already disabled (marked as 4 on the registry), which means the computer was vulnerable all this time. My main concern here is that someone could have changed this to steal the information on the pc.

The pc is at my parents house, they're both senior citizens and I don't believe either of them could have edited the registry. Can someone remotely do that in order to steal information? This pc in particular is used by my parents to fill out tax forms so I am concerned. The game won't run whether the driver service is disabled or enabled. I decided to leave it enabled.

How do I check if any damage has been done to the computer while this service was disabled?

Could someone remotely disable the service in order to steal information from the pc?

Is it even possible for the game to run at this point? (My dad would appreciate).
